Chapter 9: New Arrangement

Bailey awoke, feeling happier than she’d been in, well, ever. The evening before, she’d met the lawyer Jacey and Luca provided and subsequently answered the questions of a parade of detectives, forensic experts, and even a psychiatrist someone had sent to her hospital room. The most important thing was that Don never strayed too far away from her during all the hubbub. She wasn’t sure how he managed it, but he’d stayed the night, too.

Her gaze traveled appreciatively over his large frame sprawled across the vinyl white chair next to her bed. His charcoal blazer was slung over the back of the chair, his tie was missing, and his sleeves were rolled over his forearms. The top button of his white dress shirt was undone, too. Sleeping with his legs stretched out in front of him like that had to be uncomfortable, but she doubted he’d utter so much as a peep of complaint when he awoke. That was just the way he was — generous and giving, protective and…

“Like what you see, doll?” He stretched lazily beneath her perusal. So many muscles bunched in his arms and chest with his movements that, for a second, she couldn’t breathe.

“Maybe.” She tried to hide her blush by fussing with the linens on her bed, but he rose and the side of the mattress depressed where he settled his large frame on it. Moments later, his arms came down on either side of her pillow.

“Care to take another look?” He bent to nuzzle her temple.

“Yuck. Ew!” She pushed at his chest with her good arm. “I need to brush my teeth and take a shower.”

“You smell just fine to me.” He pressed his cheek to hers before lifting his head. It was long enough for her to feel the gentle drag of the scruff he’d grown throughout the night. He needed a shave. “I can tell you all about ripe after spending weeks at a time in the field with my battle buddies.”

“Nice.” She snickered. “You really have a way of romancing a girl in the morning.”

“Yeah?” He flicked a finger against her earlobe. “Say what you want, but it looks like it’s working.”

“Don,” she sighed, adoring the way he was kissing her with his eyes.

He sat up. “There’s something I need to tell you, before the rest of the world wakes up and invades us.”

“Okay.” She reached for his hand, and her heart melted into a puddle of softness at the way he immediately laced his fingers through hers.

“You struck me ten shades of speechless last night with your confession about our kiss being your first one.”

She gave his hand a playful yank. “According to Luca, it was your first one in seventeen years.”

“Ah. So my secret’s out.” He didn’t sound too bothered by it.

“It’s safe with me, soldier, though I intend to give your priestly lips a decent workout in the coming days.”

He leaned over her, grinning. His arms plopped on either side of her once more. “Keep talking like that, and you can forget about holding out for a toothbrush.
